As if your feet aren’t already killing after a marathon, one woman took it a step further by running in her stilettos — and setting a Guinness World Record at the same time!
Irene Sewell read up on a woman who attempted the challenge but failed and figured she could actually do it.
“As a former professional ballroom dancer turned runner and triathlete, I thought my background would pair well to help me obtain the record,” Sewell said.
The 27-year-old got her Guinness application approved just in time to take on the 7 Bridges Marathon in Chattanooga, Tennessee but the training leading up to the marathon didn’t go as smoothly as planned.

After having some forefoot pain, I saw a podiatrist who recommended that I run most of my training runs in my normal running shoes and throw in the heels every once and a while.”

“Guinness required a heel height of 2.75 inches and a base of 1.5 cm so that was challenging. I also couldn’t decide for the longest time between open and closed toe shoes because they both have pros and cons. Closed toe shoes would protect my feet but I was worried after multiple miles my feet would swell and not fit in them,” she explains. She actually tried out six different pairs of heels before finding her perfect fit.
When it came to the shock factor, Sewell’s friends weren’t the least bit surprised. “My friends know I’m always doing crazy things so they were all super excited to experience my journey with me.” As for her mom, she was supportive but also cautious. “[She] asked me multiple times leading up to the race why I couldn’t just try a 5k or half marathon!” You can’t blame her mom for looking out for her.
