When an anonymous envelope showed up at a local police department, officers were dumbfounded. Inside was a letter along with a lump of cash, but what was written on the enclosed document left them scratching their heads.
According to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, $1,000 and an apology letter was sent to a local police department in Minnesota for a hit-and-run incident that had apparently happened more than 30 years ago.
The cash money was sent in anonymously and with no signature or return address, and the sender reports that the “crime” was committed sometime in 1985 or 1986.
Considering the suspect still carries a guilty conscience, the department is now wondering if they can find the original report filed by the victim.
“It’s not something you see every day,” the local police chief, Bill Messerich, told the paper.
However, the investigation into who was hit at that time may take a while, as the victim has yet to be tracked down by the local authorities.
For now, the generous return of funds has been added to the “general donation” portion of the department’s budget.
So even though the original victim may never be repaid for his or her lost damages, at least the money will go to a good cause — protecting the citizens.
